“These students represent all the things that Dad valued, and we are honored to support their dreams for a college education,” says Kim Nuxhall, President and Board Chairman of The Nuxhall Foundation. “These are the types of students Dad would have loved—motivated, team-oriented, and character-driven.”

A portion of the 2022 Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship cohort joined Phil, Kim, and Bonnie Nuxhall on field at the 10th Anniversary Nuxy Bash for a pre-game award recognition.

Each student will receive a $1,000-$2,000 scholarship (based on their high school’s awarding process) from The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was started in 1985 by The Ole Lefthander himself. Now in its 37th year, the Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship has given more than $900,000 to college-bound student athletes in Joe’s home community.

“Dad knew how truly fortunate he was with all that was bestowed upon him, but in the back of his mind he always would have liked to have had a college education,” said Nuxhall. Joe started his broadcast career in Oxford on the campus of Miami University, and seeing students in college with so much potential inspired him. “In essence, that triggered his desire to help others go to college and make that dream come true in their own lives, and the scholarship fund has been doing just that.”

Unique in both its structure and reach, The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship Fund awards $2,000 in scholarship money to all 14 Butler County high schools (public and private), resulting in an annual scholarship disbursement of $28,000 overall. Annual funding for the scholarship has primarily been generated through The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Golf Outing—an event Joe started that recently celebrated its 37th installment in June of 2022.

The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship fund is managed by a partnership between The Nuxhall Foundation and the Fairfield Community Foundation. Student athletes who receive the award are selected by their high school athletic directors, coaches, or administrators based on a combination of selection criteria that prioritizes character.

“We want our Nuxhall Scholars to be ‘five-tool players’ who have strong character, competence, commitment, communication skills, and compassion for others,” says Nuxhall Foundation Executive Director Tyler Bradshaw. “There is no doubt that this diverse group of dreamers will represent Joe and the Nuxhall legacy proudly when they head out on their unique educational paths. We know they’ll honor The Ole Lefthander well by making an impact in the community he loved.”

This year’s cohort of Nuxhall Scholars will be recognized during a ceremony at The Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields’ annual Nuxy Bash on Saturday July 30 at 7:00pm. The Nuxy Bash is a celebrity softball game and community building event that commemorates Joe Nuxhall’s birthday.

The Nuxhall Foundation is the legacy foundation for former Major League Baseball pitcher and longtime Cincinnati Reds broadcaster, Joe Nuxhall. The Joe Nuxhall Memorial Scholarship was established by Joe Nuxhall in1985 to help students throughout the region achieve their college dreams. Additionally, The Nuxhall Foundation manages The Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields—an entirely accessible baseball and recreational facility where every player with every challenge gets every chance to play. More than 200 players between ages 4 to 78 participate in programs at the Miracle League Fields.
