The Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields is not a place, rather it's a team of people.....a lot of people, dedicated to the idea that "Every kid, with every challenge, should get every chance to play baseball".
The idea of a local baseball facility, just for people with challenges, originated with Reds Hall of Fame pitcher and announcer Joe Nuxhall. And while Joe didn't live to see the reality of the fields, his dedication and passion for the cause was inherited by his son Kim, who managed to instill in a lot of people that same passion. And that passion led Kim to form a corps of like-minded people that could make the dream of a "Miracle League" baseball park a reality. In the beginning, Kim was joined by neighbor and friend Larry Tischler as well as Steve Smith, a young Fairfield man heavily involved in Therapeutic Recreation for the Disabled. They concluded that all they needed to build a field for kids and adults with disabilities was several million dollars. So in 2010 they set out to do just that.
To make a long story short, the team grew in size and intensity joined by unions and builders, politicians and city officials, restaurateurs and contractors, pizza makers and plumbers, car dealers and big foundations, so that by 2012 The Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields were built and ready for play. Most importantly that team is still together, both in spirit and practice.
Every playing season requires the unselfish commitment of hundreds of volunteers who give generously of their time and talent and to keep the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields open and maintained to an extraordinary standard. The team of people who help keep the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Fields up and running easily exceeds 500 during the playing season. The number of major contributors, in terms of money and in-kind donations exceeds 100.
So, yes, there is a concerned board of directors and an astute director, but the answer to the question: "Who are we?" -- is you and hundreds of people just like you, members of a team dedicated to a group of kids and adults whose lives are so much the better because of your generosity.
